NASC Community Garden is ready to grow
18 February 2022

It’s dry, dead, and full of potential.

Northern Adelaide Senior College has recently secured a lease from the Archdiocese to overhaul the Anglicare community garden to become a thriving, vegetable garden for students to learn and enjoy.

Virginia Holt, Leader of Maths and Science at NASC, is thrilled that NASC can connect curriculum content in maths, science, and health to something tangible that improves the wellbeing of all.

“We’ve got this garden for a year and it’s a working progress,” says Virginia.

“I’m hoping that classes will design their curriculum to contribute to the growth and sustainability of the garden. Or for students to tie it to their research project.

“I also think there’s a lot of benefits for improving wellbeing because you’re surrounded by nature, and you can do physical work that can yield a bountiful harvest if you take the time to care for it.”

Virginia hopes that teachers, students, and staff register their interest to creating and maintaining a plot that boasts an impressive orchard, several garden beds, compost bays, water tanks and multiple sheds and greenhouses.

English as an Additional Language or Dialect Research class has already completed an audit of what they could use and achieve from the garden.

Although there are a lot of dead and unused produce, there are plenty of preserved seeds they can use to begin planting for the autumn season.

“I think there is endless opportunity with this garden because it can be whatever people make it. We’ve got this opportunity so let’s do this for our community,” says Virginia.

Northern Adelaide Senior College are accepting 2022/23 year 11-13 enrolments throughout the year.
